How to Move a Grandfather Clock Safely

More tall-case clocks are damaged in moves than by decades of running. The order of operations matters.

Before anything else

Stop the pendulum, unhook it and wrap it. Wind the weights down or remove them, labeling each one for its position. Never let cables or chains run free — secure them with foam or tape so they cannot unspool off the drum.

The movement

On most clocks the movement should be removed from the case or braced against the seat board. Chime rods bend easily and rarely sound the same after they are straightened.

Transport and re-setup

Move the case upright, strapped and padded. On arrival, reinstall in reverse, level the case, re-hang the weights in the marked positions and set the beat. We do this professionally across North Texas if you would rather not risk it.

When to call a clockmaker

If a clock has stopped, is losing more than a few minutes a week, sounds wrong when it strikes, or has been stored and not run, stop experimenting and have it inspected. Forcing a dry movement is the most expensive mistake a clock owner can make. We are at (214) 779-9792.
